Belfast Bay Shade Company’s Lampshades Win Editor’s Choice for Best of Maine 2014 in Home & Garden by Down East Magazine.
Belfast Maine – Belfast Bay Shade Company was named Best Lampshades in this year’s poll of Down East Magazine readers’ favorites. Thousands of Down East readers voted February through April for their statewide selections and Belfast Bay Shade Company made the list. The full list of the Best Of honored businesses, places and more, appears in the July issue of Down East.
The “Best of Maine” awards occur annually and provide Down East readers the opportunity to nominate the Maine people, places and things that mean the most to them. Based solely on popular vote, the winners represent the best of Maine as identified by the people who know Maine the best: residents and repeat visitors.
“This year thousands of readers nominated their favorites across Maine,” said Down East Editor in Chief Kathleen Fleury. “To be included in this list selected by the readers of Down East or the editorial team here means that you truly are part of what makes Maine so great. Our readers and team take the task of selecting the Best Of very seriously. It really is an honor.”
Belfast Bay Shade Company is a small and quickly growing artisanal workshop that specializes in fine art lampshades and lighting located on the top floor of the historic Belfast post office. Since debuting their etching press-printed botanical shades at the New York International Gift Fair in 2013, the husband and wife team of printmaker and electrician, Dina Petrillo and Ryan Herz have diversified their menu of shade designs, lamps and fixtures and adapted their original prints to create a line of linen shades in dozens of colors and motifs in an array of sizes from tiny drums for wall sconces and vanities, to portable table and floor lamps, to pendants that range in complexity from mega drum chandeliers to simple swag cord and track installation. While Belfast Bay’s own line of hand-crafted black and malleable iron portable lamps and fixtures adds a contemporary industrial counterpoint to their softer botanical shade designs, they have developed a unique shade construction that works with commercial and up-cycled lamps as well as the lamp designs of local artisans in wood, ceramic and glass. They enthusiastically welcome collaborations with designers to grow their lighting repertoire for homes, offices, restaurants, hotels, public and event lighting. Belfast Bay shades can be found locally in Maine galleries, gift shops, lighting and interior design showrooms spanning Portland to Mount Dessert Island, in more than a dozen US cities and towns and as far away as Mantova, Italy.
Petrillo says, “We are thrilled to be named among the amazing Maine-based businesses chosen by Down East’s editors and readers and are enormously grateful for all the support we’ve gotten from the Belfast Creative Coalition, Women, Work and Community, all our local shops and customers, and other Waldo County artisans over the last year and half…Thank you!”
Belfast Bay’s showroom and working studio is open to the public during Belfast’s Final Friday Art Walks from 5:30-8pm throughout the summer and by appointment. Contact Dina Petrillo at (207) 735-8237 or firstname.lastname@example.org, find them on facebook and at www.belfastbayshadecompany.com.
