Abbie Read’s Sculpture “Library” at Belfast Free Library July 5-August 30; reception July 19

July 19 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

The Kramer Gallery of the Belfast Free Library will have a display of artist Abbie Read’s wall mounted sculpture, Library July 5- August 30.

A reception with an artist talk will be held on Wednesday July 19th beginning at 6:30p.m. All are welcome.

Read’s Library began in 2010 as a project involving the construction of individual objects that resemble books, as the boxes open and close along a spine. At some point she began to hang them together and the overall sculpture was conceived. The sculpture now consists of numerous panels amounting to 40 feet of continuous “shelf.”

According to the artist , Library is intended to engage the audience in thinking about the nature of books as physical objects and their role in research, narrative and the sharing of stories, our own and those of a universal nature. As the wall space is limited at the Belfast Free Library a smaller selection of the actual piece will be on display.

Abbie Read majored in studio art and art history at Oberlin College and received her MFA from the University Of Michigan School Of Art. She has shown in many Maine galleries and institutions including the Portland Museum of Art, the Maine Center for Contemporary Art, the University of Southern Maine, Waterfall Arts, and Aarhus Gallery. In 2014 she was one of eight artists to show at the U.S. ambassador’s residence in Doha, Qatar.
