big draw sketchbmatros jpgFor the first year ever, Belfast, Maine is joining in the fun of The Big Draw with a free sketch-fest at Waterfall Arts on Saturday, October 25th from 11 to 2. The Big Draw is an annual celebration of drawing happening around the world in over twenty countries, with 280,000 people expected to join in over 1000 events. The Big Draw offers thousands of enjoyable, free drawing activities which connect people of all ages with museums, outdoor spaces, artists, designers, illustrators – and each other. These events are for those who love to draw, as well as for those who think they can’t!
Waterfall Arts’ Youth and Families Outreach Coordinator Bridget Matros says, “the timing is perfect – we’ve started having  free art parties for kids every month, and this month is The Big Draw. Why not invite EVERYONE to the party?” There’s no need to worry about “what to draw” – inspiring activities include drawing in 3D (no special skills required – 3D glasses available), jumbo doodles, Zentangling, an Exquisite-Corpse-a-Thon, sketchbook challenges, Local Celebrity Win, Lose, or Draw, and free-draw using a variety of materials, all provided by Waterfall Arts. From scribbling babies to professional artists, there’s something for everyone!

“This isn’t going to be an art class with people sitting at tables drawing. It’s an art party: it’s going to be big. It’s going to be silly. It’s going to be over the top. If it’s sunny we hope to roll huge paper out the windows from the second story of the building to the ground. If it rains, we’ll cover a studio in paper floor to ceiling and go for it.”

Adults are welcome to try out the live model Figure Drawing session that happens at Waterfall Arts every Saturday morning, from 9:30-12pm. The drop-in fee for Life Drawing is $15; for this week only, drawing materials will be provided for first-timers.

The Big Draw and other Affordable All Ages Art Happenings (AAAAH) at Waterfall Arts are made possible by a generous grant from the Quimby Foundation, the Maine Arts Commission and through public support.
