Dear Waldo County Hills To Sea Trail Supporters!
As we all begin to think about spring the Belfast contingent of the 30 mile trail to Unity wants to update you on our progress over the winter…..and once again thank you for supporting what we hope will soon become a wonderful 13 mile trail section connecting Belfast to Frye Mountain.
Last fall, prior to being awarded the National Park Service technical assistance grant, a core group, joined by many others, began monthly meetings to plan the initial phase of securing our trail route. So far we have obtained town tax maps and superimposed these on topographical maps to give us best possible information as we start imagining likely routes through Waldo, Brooks and Knox.
Next steps included the beginnings of two critical objectives: identifying and contacting local and out of state landowners, as well as completing six exploratory hikes on possible routes starting at both ends in Belfast and at Frye Mountain. During these endeavors we have made new allies who have provided support and shared their knowledge of scenic high spots in the area.
Glorious weather is ahead and we eagerly anticipate increasing such efforts to secure a final trail route. We welcome all to join our growing base of committed volunteers. Please contact Cloe Chunn (cloechunn@gmail) for volunteering and other information.
Again, thank you for your encouragement and a final shout out of gratitude to our organizational and mentoring partners: Waldo County Trails Association and Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition.
