Abbie Read Studio

My studio on Appleton Ridge is surrounded by ornamental gardens that were developed as display gardens when I ran my garden design business, ARTgarden. They contain the usual hardy plantings as well as the unusual. I now work full time in my studio, trying to keep up with the maintenance on the gardens during the gardening seasons. We are located across the valley from Appleton Creamery, which is owned and operated by my sister Caitlin Hunter.

I have been working with handmade, old and altered books for a number of years now. Currently I have a large wall installation, called Library, in the Portland Museum of Art Biennial exhibit which runs from October 3 until January 5, 2014. This piece consists of numerous book-like constructions that make up a large assemblage. Visitors to my Open Studio during the Cultivate! event can see a similar piece under construction. I am simultaneously creating work made from strips of old book covers sewn together to form patches which are then arranged and sewn into crazy quilt like wall hangings. Some of these will also be on view.

DIRECTIONS: To get to Abbie Read’s studio from Route 3, follow 131 south through Searsmont, then just after town take Appleton Ridge Road (you’ll see a sign at the intersection) for another 7.3 miles. Cross Route 105 and come up the hill to #64 Appleton Ridge Road. My studio is on the right, right on the road. Park in the driveway or along the road. Alternatively, you can follow 131 south through Appleton Village, past the Appleton Village School and turn right on 105 west. Come another mile and then turn left, Come up the hill ¼ mile and studio is on the right.

Enjoy the views from Appleton Ridge and from my studio.
