Waterfall Arts is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) contemporary arts center located in Belfast and Montville, Maine.
Waterfall Arts began as the Arts Center at Kingdom Falls in 1998 when founders Alan and Lorna Crichton acquired the Kingdom Falls property in rural Montville.
This exceptionally beautiful site once served as an extension of the original home of Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. After forming a Board of Directors and making necessary improvements to the property, the organization began offering summer art courses and residencies in 2000, and in 2002 received its 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status from the IRS.
The purchase of the former Governor Anderson School in nearby Belfast in December 2005 allowed the organization to expand its outreach to year-round. It began its first programs at the Belfast site in spring 2006 and celebrated its grand opening in the building on September 30th of that year. At the time of its Belfast expansion, the Board voted to adopt a new name, Waterfall Arts, to embrace both locations.
The name of the organization derives from the natural waterfalls that grace the Montville site and serves as inspiration for our mission of creating community in harmony with nature through the transformative power of the arts. Feel the Power of Art!
PROJECT RANGEWAY: Produced for Waterfall Arts and funded in part by the Maine Arts Commission. Watch on vimeo.
Belfast, Maine has 17 public access points to the shore or river’s edge, referred to as ‘rangeways’ from Colonial times. The community has begun to mark these with permanent art installations of split-rock gateways, with Allyn St. being the first.
The installations have been organized by Waterfall Arts, Centers for Art and Design, and made possible in part by the NLT Foundation, the Davis Conservation Fund, and the City of Belfast.
Waterfall Arts is a participant of the Final Fridays Art Walk.
Waterfall Arts is located at 256 High Street in Belfast. Please visit waterfallarts.org for information on classes, studio rentals, exhibitions and community events.
