Belfast area parents, students, and local theatre friends – the RSU 71 school board is looking into creating a theatre arts position at Belfast Area High School!
There will be a board meeting on MONDAY, FEBRUARY 22 at 6:30 p.m. at Nickerson School in Swanville. It would be an opportunity to stand in support of the position and speak to the importance of theatre education.
If you support the issue, this is a rare opportunity to speak to the power of theatre arts in education. Currently there are no drama/theatre classes being taught at BAHS. There was a speech/drama class taught in the past but not in the last few years. There is a high school drama club that produces a musical in the fall, competes in the state one-acts in the winter, and mounts a straight play in the spring. But these are extra-curricular – they are not academic classes students can take for high school credit. High schoolers must take one fine arts class, and right now that is only offered through visual art, music and chorus.
Please take a moment and email the board to support the theatre arts position. Better yet, come to the meeting and tell them in person. It will take public support for the board to vote to create the position.
