Susan Balch: A Retrospective
Susan was known as an artist and a supporter of the arts. She moved to Swanville, Maine in 1971 and for years worked many jobs to support her career as an artist. Susan excelled as a wood and linoleum block print artist. The combination of these hand water colored prints with her love of and familiarity with nature proved a complete success.
Susan has been the only artist to twice win the Common Ground Country Fair poster contest: in 2002 for the “Dancing Corn” design and in 2005 for her “Chickens” submission.
Susan found the perfect job to support her art at Liberty Graphics where, as the only “hand color separator” she was able to not only use her many talents as an artist in the job but also in creating a number of their designs. These and a broad selection of work from her fifty year career will be included in the exhibit.
During the forty plus years that Susan lived in the area she was active in many arts associations that supported the budding arts community that we now enjoy in Belfast. Many of her exquisite works will be very familiar to the viewer. Susan’s bright smile and open heart are dearly missed.
On Saturday April 26 the community is invited to join the family in a celebration of Susan’s life in the Abbott Room of the Belfast Free Library from 2-4 p.m.
