The 10th Annual Poetry Festival on October 17th and 18th, 2014 featured 24 poets, 10 artists, 14 performers, and 8 workshop leaders from across Maine and beyond! This brings the number of Festival alumni featured over the last decade to 221 poets, artists, and performers.
Below is a thank you letter to all involved from Jacob Fricke, one of the Festival organizers and former Belfast Poet Laureate, 2011:
Greetings, one and all!
I would like to congratulate and deeply thank each of you for your part in putting together a splendid and solid Belfast Poetry Festival this year. The work presented was, in a word, tremendous – inspired, smartly evocative, timely, vocal – rich, powerful work. One audience member from Friday, during the open mic, thanked the room for “so much empathy and realism,” to which I would want to add, so much intelligence and so much thoughtfulness about craft and medium. Someone may even have described the talent at the festival this year as “world class.” The audiences each night responded with notable enthusiasm, and continue to do so as the emails and comments keep coming in.
So, too, the workshops and panel discussion brought some very compelling concepts to the table and showed, to a one, the experience of seasoned educators and community builders. We are proud to have had you represent us.
This year’s program was definitely an ambitious undertaking – effectively doubling all aspects of festival programming and adding a few things we’ve never done before – and certainly the festival had a few rough edges and loose strands. We are particularly grateful for your patience and graciousness this year, which helped a great deal and is greatly appreciated.
We are honored by and deeply grateful for all that you brought to the festival. If we had been hoping to do something a little extra special to celebrate our 10th annual presentation, you have more than surpassed that ambition. Thank you!
Please know that you are always welcome in Belfast, and in the Belfast creative community.
Yours in the arts,
The Belfast Poetry Festival
