Events happening in the Belfast area from Thursday July 10th through Wednesday the 16th, highlights include:

Summer Crafts and Children’s Programs at Penobscot Marine Museum

Summer activities for children and adults begin this July at Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport.  Wednesdays and Fridays are Children’s Program days, and Thursdays are Artisan Days,demonstrations of 19th century crafts. The Penobscot Marine Museum programs are free with museum admission, and museum admission is free for Searsport residents.

Artisan Days begin on Thursday, July 10th with weaver and spinner Alice Seeger demonstrating her craft on the museum campus from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.  Come try your hand at weaving and spinning on a Great Wheel!

Friday, July 11, 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm the Children’s Program, Happy Birthday E.B. White!, is a birthday celebration for beloved Charlotte’s Web author E.B. White.  Join us for a reading from Stuart Little, a look at E.B.White’s boat in our collection, birthday cake and a craft project.  In PMM’s Peapod.

On Wednesday, July 16, from 11:00 am to noon, our Children’s Program is Making Candles.  Make your very own candles the way the early settlers made theirs, with educator and craftsperson Alice Seeger.  In PMM’s Peapod.

Belfast Summer Nights Concert

This week’s concert is on Thursday, July 10th! Enjoy the music of the Mondaynite Jazz Orchestra, on the corner of High and Main Streets between the traffic light and the Belfast Co-op!

Belfast Summer Nights concerts happen every Thursday in the summer, 5:30 to 7:30 pm, in downtown Belfast. Locations rotate between-
STEAMBOAT LANDING PARK (next to the Boathouse, 34 Commercial Street, Belfast)
HIGH STREET- On the street, between the traffic light and the Belfast Co-op
BEAVER STREET- The diagonal street that leaves Post Office Square and goes to High Street at The Belfast Co-op.

Cassatt String Quartet featured in 2014 Seal Bay Festival, Maine

A free concert, part of the Seal Bay Festival of American Chamber Music, will be held at Waterfall Arts on Thursday, July 10th, beginning at 7pm. The Cassatt String Quartet will perform new music by three American composers: Daniel Godfrey, Bruce Adolphe, and Lawrence Dillon. Acclaimed as one of America’s outstanding ensembles, the Manhattan based Cassatt Quartet has performed throughout North America, Europe, and the Far East, with appearances at New York’s Alice Tully Hall and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, the Tanglewood Music Theater, the Kennedy Center and the Library of Congress.

After the concert, the audience is invited to a discussion or colloquium with the composers and musicians to share views, reactions to the music, and common concerns in the visual and performing arts.  A wine and cheese reception closes out the event.

Compositions With Clayton Clemetson

On Saturday July 12, 6pm, pianist and composer Clayton Clementson will perform at the Captain A.V. Nickels Inn in Searsport. Clayton Clemetson, composer and pianist, has studied music across all genres, providing piano accompaniment and singing in Bulgarian, shapenote, Macedonian, Corsican, and other world choirs. An aspiring film score composer, his passion for film music has influenced his piano playing since beginning lessons at age eight. Clayton has studied with internationally acclaimed Quebecois pianist Rachel Aucoin and Cape Breton pianist Neil Pearlman. He has produced three albums of his original music

Page to Screen – Irish style

This summer the Belfast Free Library’s “Irish Summer Reading Program” will be a “Page to Screen” discussion series where we will read the book and then watch the film adaptation. The series will begin Tuesday July 15th, 6:30 pm with a discussion of the book by Roddy Doyle, “The Snapper.” Attendees will then watch and discuss the 1992 film version, directed by Stephen Frears on Tuesday July 29th, 6:30pm. “The Snapper” is set in working class north Dublin, where Doyle grew up and lives.

Magician Norman Ng at the Belfast Free Library

Magician Norman Ng will perform a magic show at the Belfast Free Library on Wednesday, July 16th, at 7:00 PM. This event is family-friendly!Norman has gained national recognition in the magic community. He has performed with and for some of the greatest magicians in the world. He has won numerous national and international magic awards. In 2011 he was named “America’s Best Variety Act” by Campus Activities Magazine.Children are invited to the Abbott Room at the library on Tuesday at 10:30 to make magician’s hats.
