Belfast Garden Club Open Garden Day
July 19 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
71 Bayview, Belfast
7/19/19, 10am to 4pm
Slow your pace down a bit this summer and visit the July 19th Open Garden Day at 71 Bayview in Belfast. Walk along the paths of a hidden hillside garden or view it all from the patio below. There are also several other garden beds and extensive stone work to see. The garden will be open from 10 am to 4 pm, rain or shine. A $5 donation helps the Belfast Garden Club fund public gardens and contribute towards a Unity College scholarship.
Kathy and Law Fotterall are florists who ran an organic garden business before retirement. They enjoy experimenting with different combinations of plants, shrubs, and trees, and they even bring plants from their Florida winter garden to add unusual touches to their Maine gardens. Among the delights along the paths in the sloped backyard garden are a stunning Stewartia tree, River birch, Pagoda dogwood, various evergreens, delphiniums, Lace-Cap hydrangeas, lilies, and roses. Law acquires the stones for the walls and stairs that accent the gardens from various sources, including the recent reconstruction of Belfast’s Front Street and his neighbors’ excavations. Since their garden was last open in 2016, Law and Kathy have created a stone-wall-lined shade garden, an expanded border garden that features Red Twig dogwood and perennials, an enhanced rose and herb garden in the front yard, and an entry garden.
See a series of Open Gardens at their best every Friday through August 23. Individual $5 tickets or a $30 season pass, which provides 9 admissions to a garden, are available on site or in advance at Aubuchon Hardware, Left Bank Books, or The Good Table in Belfast.
