7pm Abbot Room. Belfast Free Library

“Fantasy” is the theme for January at the Belfast Free Library’s “Friday Night Flix” film series. The month features four fantasy films that date from the 1930s to the 2010s. All the movies are free and take place at 7pm in the Abbott Room of the Belfast Free Library.

Jan. 4th “Arrival” (2016) After 12 mysterious spacecraft land around the world, a linguist (Amy Adams) is recruited by the United States military to decipher the coded communications of the aliens at one of their landing sites in Montana. However, certain nations view the aliens as a bona fide threat and prepare to go to war with them unless their intentions can be verified – and quick. The clock is ticking! “Arrival was” nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Picture. Truly, the thinking man’s or woman’s sci-fi film.

Jan. 11th “Life of Pi” (2012) This visually stunning film tells the story of a young boy named Pi, who is shipwrecked at sea. As a castaway on the lifeboat, he forms a bond with an unlikely survivor of the shipwreck – a fearsome Bengal tiger! Pi and the terrifying beast start out as adversaries, but as the days drag into months, Pi and the tiger will learn to trust each other if both are to survive. Nominated for 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, this fairy tale for adults is bound to warm your heart and feed your soul.

Jan. 18th “Frankenstein” (the original) (1931) “It’s alive! It’s alive!” Honoring the 200th anniversary of the publication of the Mary Shelly’s groundbreaking novel, this is the first, and perhaps best, adaptation ever put on the screen. You know the story. The brilliant Dr. Frankenstein robs graves for body parts and successfully creates an artificial human, only to reject the creature after giving it life. But is there a deeper meaning to this tale? The fear, prejudice and hostility that the townspeople exhibit toward the creature, based solely on its appearance, begs the question: Who’s the real monster here?

January 25th “Defending Your Life” (1991) What really happens when we die? Hollywood has explored this theme for years, but rarely with such humor and wit. In the story, Daniel dies in a car crash and arrives in Judgment City. It’s there that he’s forced to defend his actions on earth – so he can either “move on” or return to earth to correct his failings. But if that’s not enough, Daniel also finds himself falling in love up there. Now what? Albert Brooks, Meryl Streep and Rip Torn turn the after-life into laughter-life.
