Maine Poetry Express at Belfast Free Library

June 18 @ 6:30 pm

Tuesday June 18th, 6:30pm

Belfast Free Library

Everyone is invited to attend the Maine Poetry Express community reading at the Belfast Free Library Tuesday June 18th at 6:30 p.m. The Maine Poetry Express is a program of the Maine Humanities Council and the Maine State Library to bring Maine poetry and poets to local libraries and their communities.
The Maine Poetry Express, originally designed by poet, Wesley McNair during his time as the Maine State Poet Laureate connects local poets in sharing Maine’s poetry with their community. “The landscape of Maine’s voices is varied and valuable, addressing so many aspects of what it can mean to experience life in this state. Part of the goal of the Poetry Express is to create a space for community members, local poets, and libraries to get together and share in that history, often surprising themselves,” said Jan Bindas-Tenney, Program Officer at the Maine Humanities Council.
The Belfast event will explore themes important to Belfast: home, shelter and development. Twelve community members have signed up, selected a Maine poem and have learned to perform the poem in a workshop with Belfast Poet Laureate, Arielle Greenberg. Join us in the Abbott Room of the Belfast Free Library on Tuesday June 18th, 6:30 pm as Greenberg leads the participants in the reading.

“I’m honored to be part of this state-wide program,” says Arielle Greenberg, “ Its goal is similar to my own goal as Poet Laureate of Belfast: to help Mainers find contemporary poems which resonate for them. I chose the subject of housing and shelter since it’s a vital topic in our community, and look forward to an event that will be moving and thought-provoking.”
