Pia Gibson to be honored with first annual Bridge Alumni award at Young Artist Gallery Takeover exhibition opening

(Belfast) – To celebrate Arts Advocacy Month in March, Waterfall Arts presents the fourth annual YOUNG ARTISTS GALLERY TAKEOVER exhibition in its Clifford and Corridor Galleries. The exhibition will open with a reception Friday, March 1, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. The reception is free and everyone is welcome to attend, meet the artists, and enjoy the show. At 6:00 PM during the reception, Waterfall Arts will present its first annual Bridge Alumni award to a young artist in the community. The inaugural award will go to Belfast resident, Pia Gibson.

Pia Gibson was one of the first participants in the Bridge after school art program, a cornerstone program of the Youth and Family Outreach program at Waterfall Arts. In talking about her artistic process and development as a young artist, Pia shared, “I’ve loved drawing for as long as I can remember, and photorealism has been a fascination of mine since elementary school. Recreating photos with graphite is really satisfying for me, and I love to challenge myself to create something as close to life as possible. Graphite is my favorite medium, though I’ve recently been having fun with charcoals as well, especially their ability to layer and create new values. I’m grateful for Waterfall’s Bridge and Young Artist Studio programs, which have given me a space to experiment and find my personal style while being inspired by other young artists.”

The multi-tiered Youth and Family Outreach Program (YFO) at Waterfall Arts was launched in 2013 with a priority goal of bridging the gap between local families and the abundant resources of the local art scene. The program provides safe spaces for young artists to connect with themselves, each other, and the community through quality creative experiences. The Bridge after school art program for 6th graders was one of the first YFO programs. Clear messages from the community, teachers, and families for “more opportunities like this” were the impetus to expand the program’s outreach, and increase public access to art and creative experiences through a variety of new programming efforts. Additional YFO programs now include the weekly Young Artists Studio drop in studio for 8 to 18 year olds, All Ages Art Happening events like The Glow Show and Belfast Chalk Walk, Art Together Mornings where adult and child create side by side, outreach to local schools and youth serving organizations, and the YOUNG ARTISTS GALLERY TAKEOVER exhibition. Thanks to support from local businesses, foundations, and private donors, all of the YFO programs at Waterfall Arts are either free or low cost.

For the YOUNG ARTISTS GALLERY TAKEOVER exhibition, the Clifford and Corridor Galleries at Waterfall Arts will feature over 200 works from Waldo County area schools and youth groups ranging in age from kindergarten through high school. This exhibit recognizes young people as the next generation of creative artists. Arts Advocacy Month emphasizes the value of art education for all children and encourages support for quality school art programs. It also provides a forum for recognizing skills developed through visual arts experiences that are not possible in other curriculum subjects.
The YOUNG ARTISTS GALLERY TAKEOVER exhibition will be on display through March 29. Gallery hours are 10:00AM – 5:00 PM, Tuesdays through Fridays, and by appointment. The exhibition is made possible by local business sponsors Little River Veterinary Hospital, Bangor Savings Bank, and the Green Store. Additional support is provided by foundations such as the Maine Arts Commission, Morton Kelly Charitable Trust, and the Onion Foundation, as well as individual donors.

Launched in 2000, Waterfall Arts is a community arts center that offers resources to students, professionals, and arts enthusiasts of all ages. Opportunities include classes, exhibitions, art events, performances, open community studios (clay, print, and darkroom photography), public art projects, and more. Waterfall Arts is located at 256 High Street in downtown Belfast. For more information, visit waterfallarts.org or call 338-2222.
