Two Open Gardens in Searsport
July 17 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Two gardens will be featured on the July 17 Belfast Garden Club’s Open Garden Day. Both are in Searsport, a 5-minute walk apart, at 15 Water St. and 5 Elm St. They will be open from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, rain or shine. A $5 donation admits visitors to both gardens (checks or exact change is appreciated). To protect Open Garden visitors, volunteers, and homeowners during the current COVID situation, all will be asked to wear face masks and to maintain appropriate physical distancing while at the gardens. Hand sanitizer and masks will be available for those who cannot bring their own.
Jim Rose rebuilt his garden at 15 Water St. a year and a half ago, after repositioning his driveway, removing most of the lawn, adding a deck, and finishing renovations to his 185-year-old house. In addition to planting new beds in front of the house, Jim added evergreens, perennials, and specimen plants to his new garden, which has views of Penobscot Bay and slopes down to a grassy area bordered by trees and shrubs in back of the house. An artist and a self-professed “rock lover,” Jim brought in many boulders to his garden and landscape, which he uses as structural elements and decorative accents. The deck, which overlooks the garden, will also be open to guests.
Janet Williams’s cottage garden, at 5 Elm St., evolved organically. Seeing an opportunity when hurricane winds blew down a beloved willow tree next to her backyard pond, Janet filled in the hole and built a heart-shaped, stone-wall bordered bed. Originally from England, Janet was inspired by English cottage gardens, but her densely planted garden beds and borders feature native flowers and interesting shrubs, as well as perennials, flowering vines on trellises, vegetables, and herbs’
