View Tree Fruits and Colorful Blooms August 17

August 17 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

$5

August 17, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Belfast Garden Club will host an Open Garden Day at Piper Stream Farm in Northport with perennial beds, native shrubs, an orchard and a vegetable garden on display. $5 on-site donation. FMI: belfastgardenclub.org (directions on website).

At Piper Stream Farm in Northport, a high fenced enclosure that used to keep in
commercially farmed red deer now keeps out wild deer to protect pear, cherry, peach, apple and
plum trees and a bountiful vegetable garden. Owner Susan Conard says there’s enough variety to
provide a good fruit harvest in any given year. Visitors can see the orchard, vegetable garden and
expansive perennial beds on this 50-acre property August 17 during an Open Garden Day
sponsored by Belfast Garden Club.

At her house, set well back from the garden, Conard grows warm-season vegetables in containers
for handy picking and in a small greenhouse that helps extend the growing season. Across from
the house, she has created colorful flower beds with an appealing mix of natives and cultivars.
Conard lets volunteer plants—like black-eyed Susans, daisies and goldenrod—thrive amidst the
lilies, Echinachea, zinnias and shrubs – as long as they contribute to her goal of season-long
color.
