“Writing the Personal Essay”
February 1 @ 10:30 am - 2:00 pm
“Writing the Personal Essay” will be offered on Saturday, February 1 from 10:00 to 2:30, with a half hour bag lunch break, at the Belfast Free Library. Poet and essayist Linda Buckmaster will lead the workshop made possible by a grant from the Maine Humanities Council. The event is free and open to all. Registration by January 27 required.
The personal essay has been undergoing a resurgence of interest and experimentation in recent decades. The options are exciting from “flash” to the longer braided essay or collage. Through reading and writing, participants will discover what they want to say and how to say it.
For inspiration and craft, we will read a variety of essayists in a Reading Packet. We will “read like a writer,” unpacking the tools the authors have used in their work and how we might use them in our own writing. Through visual and word prompts, we will create new work that participants can expand later.
No previous writing experience is necessary and the workshop is open to writers of all levels. New writers will get started, and more experienced writers will be able to grow their skills.
Former Poet Laureate Linda Buckmaster’s poetry and prose have appeared in almost forty journals. Her book, Space Heart. A Memoir in Stages, was published by Burrow Press in 2018. She has been teaching for four decades.
The Reading Packet will be available at the Library front desk after January 17. Workshop is limited to 15. To register or for more info, contact Buckmaster at firstname.lastname@example.org. www.lindabuckmaster.com
