Open Mic Plus featuring Diane Linscott and Lincoln Blake

August 15 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Sandy Point Community Hall, 684 US Rt. 1
Stockton Springs, ME 04915 United States
+ Google Map

Diane Linscott got a late start as a singer when, after raising a family, she decided she had to pursue her dream of singing professionally. She received a talent scholarship to the Jazz in July program at UMass where renowned jazz pianist and composer Dr. Billy Taylor was guest director, and from that experience started her career.

Since 1998 she has spent the winter in Sarasota, Florida and holds forth every Thursday night, December through April, at Islands End in Anna Maria with an outstanding trio. During the summer months she performs with her trio at various venues throughout her home state of Maine.

Linscott's Maine performance venues have included The Asticou, Claremont, The Manor, Ocean Meadows Inn, the Camden Opera House, Borders, Maine Center for the Arts, Downeast Jazz Festival, and frequent live performances on Maine Public Radio. In Florida, she has performed at the Sarasota Jazz Festival's Jazz Caravan, Florida Winefest, a VIP concert before Patti Austin and Jane Monheit at the Van Wezel, and many private functions.

Of her singing, The Mississippi Rag noted, “Although most of the singers of jazz's Golden Age are no longer with us, there are a few women singing today who seem to embody the best aspects of their predecessors. Diane Linscott is one of them...”

Linscott has recorded four self-produced CDs. She is also an active visual artist, sculptor, printmaker, jewelry designer having won awards in all disciplines. Her art jewelry is shown at L'attitude Gallery, Newbury Street, Boston, and Sarasota, and at her studios in Maine and Florida.

Lincoln Blake is native to midcoast Maine. Starting out on saxophone, Lincoln went on to study piano at the University of Maine at Augusta. He has been a professional musician in Maine for over twenty years, playing at such venues as The Samoset, The Asticou Inn, and The Bar Harbor Club. Lincoln is a member of the Flat Earth Society and in his spare time enjoys reading the poetry of Richard Nixon.

Recommended donation is $3 - $10 on a sliding scale, with children under 18 free.

Extra parking is available across the street.

For more information, call 567-4044.

Hope to see you there!

NOTE: The Ice Cream Social that was planned for this Wednesday, 8/8, has been postponed to a later date, due to ongoing construction at the hall.

Belfast Garden Club features Cascading Cottage Garden

August 24 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
$5

Stepping through the front gate at Kate McLeod’s home on Patterson Hill, one
enters a sheltered setting with the storybook appeal of “The Secret Garden.” McLeod converted
the sloping, mostly shaded site from an acre of burdocks piled with garbage into a remarkable
cascade of cottage-style beds, window boxes, and container plants, interspersed by stonework and
appealing accents—like a Venus de Milo statue bathed in blossoms.
It’s taken McLeod eight years to effect this remarkable change, and she’s managed it alongside
meeting the needs of 35 clients, for whom she does landscape design and gardening. On August
24, visitors can stroll her yard and see her art studio during the final event of Belfast Garden
Club’s 2018 Open Garden Days.
McLeod’s artistic eye is evident in the collage of textures and colors that mark the gardens. Her
botanical knowledge shows up in the unusual plant choices, like a towering stand of plume
poppy, the backdrop to a patio where lawn chairs sit on gravel brightened by volunteer brown-
eyed Susans.
As her vision evolves, so do the gardens; “I’m always changing it,” McLeod says. By her art
studio, where she makes “bright bird” mirrors, a new bed is in progress. McLeod uses cardboard
liberally—topped by leaves, manure and soil—to smother existing grass or weeds, placing new
plantings into holes within the cardboard.
McLeod’s garden opens on Friday August 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine. From Belfast,
head north on Route One across the bridge and left onto Route 141. Take the first left onto
Robbins Road and go right onto Patterson Hill Rd. The garden is at #76, on the left just past the
summit. A $5 donation per visitor helps the Belfast Garden Club fund scholarships.
