Granite Gallery, 68 Main Street in Tenants Harbor will be displaying artwork by three Maine Women Artists: DiTa Ondek, Susan Tobey-White and Lauren Gill from August 18-23 from noon-4pm, with an artists’ reception on Friday August 18 from 5-7 pm. The show is inspired by the Frippery and Toggery of
DiTa’s encaustic vintage wedding dresses and antique christening gowns and the acrylic dancing figures and little girls in party dresses by Susan Tobey-White; Lauren Gill provides the Landscapery elements of Midcoast Maine.
DiTa’s encaustic work is an exploration of the vintage wedding dresses in Maine from the 1900-1940. Each encaustic piece is accompanied by an original ekphrastic poem. DiTa will also be exhibiting a series of expressionistic encaustic inspired by her yearly trek to Monhegan Island. She will also be debuting a new chapbook of poetry celebrating the art called “Reach up & Trap a Piece of Sky, Monhegan Mindfulness.” DiTa Ondek resides in Tenants Harbor. She has worked with watercolors for 15 years and other media (Polaroid transfers and digital photography) with past gallery shows in Texas, Connecticut, Maine, New York and Florida. (1985-2000) Currently, she is painting with acrylics exhibiting at the Port Clyde Art Gallery and the Kefauver Studio and Gallery in Damariscotta. Her work evolves with fearless broad strokes and bright colors from drawings, plein air sketches or photographs in order to develop a style of her own: images – moments frozen fresh and bright. Susan Tobey White defines herself as artist and educator.
She is from Belfast, Maine. As an artist she is best known for her colorful, energetic paintings of dancers which inspire smiles and laughter from the viewer. From professional dancers to dancers at heart Susan’s work is continually praised for the feeling of well-being it evokes. She remarks, “My dancers are about the motion, the emotion and the colors and patterns of dance.” She has designed the 2004 and 2007 North Atlantic Blues Festival Poster and the 2008-2012 Maine Celtic Festival Poster.
Her work is in private collections throughout the United States, in Canada, Europe and Australia and has been in galleries in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Maine. Her website iswww.susantobeywhite.com
