You are invited to join members of the Belfast City Council and members of the 10th Annual Belfast Poetry Festival Steering Committee Friday, August 29 at 4:30 PM at Belfast City Hall for a presentation of a city resolution “In honor of the efforts of Belfast’s Poets and Poets Laureate on the eve of the City’s 10th Annual Belfast Poetry Festival.” Former Belfast Poet Laureate Karin Spitfire will read her phenomenal poem “Be Belfastian” at the event. It was Councilor Michael Hurley that created the position of Belfast Poet Laureate in 2001, with the appointment of Bern Porter, to elevate and define the Belfast poetry community.

Text of the Resolution follows:
Whereas, Belfast has been blessed with enormous creative talent which proudly includes may fine writers and Poets, and
Whereas, the officially designated Poets Laureate of Belfast have over time distinguished their Art, their colleagues, themselves and this community, and
Whereas, our community of poets have worked with our Poets Laureate over time to expand their individual and collective talents by blending them with other poets, writers, musicians, dancers, mimes, fine artists and storytellers, and
Whereas, our community of poets, led by our respective Poets Laureate have convened and celebrated the Art of Poetry by organizing and presenting nine wondrous Poetry Festivals which have enriched this City and distinguished this community throughout the State of Maine and this nation,
Now therefore be it Resolved :
That the City Council of the City of Belfast does hereby recognize, salute and praise the efforts of all Belfast Poets and our beloved Poets Laureate for their outstanding contribution to the social cultural, historical, artistic and economic life of Belfast and the greater Belfast region.
Your presence and your efforts are sincerely appreciated. By motion of this body, please accept our heartfelt thanks.
