The Tom Luther Quintet is heading to the recording studio, and mounting a Kick-starter Crowd-funding campaign for their second studio album, scheduled for release in March of next year. In support of the fundraiser, they will be performing at the Highlands Coffee House in Thomaston, and that same evening be broadcasting a live performance on Maine Public Radio. Both events take place on Sunday November 23. The Highlands performance goes from 1:00pm until 3:00pm, and the radio broadcast will start at 9:00pm. There is no cost for either.
The Tom Luther Quintet is a modern jazz quintet based in the midcoast, performing predominantly original music inspired by the work of such luminaries as Charles Mingus and Herbie Hancock. They have performed at the Aarhus Gallery, the Free Range Festival, Belfast Summer Nights, and various venues in the Portland area. They have appeared on MPBN several times, and released a debut album in 2012 called “Everything Is Blue”, available on Amazon and Itunes.
The entirety of the new album will be pianist and composer Tom Luther’s original compositions, as was the first. “This album is going to be a really nice document of both what we have been doing since the first album( “Everything Is Blue”2012) and the creative direction that we are going in” says Luther. “Its a balanced mix of some well seasoned material, and some brand new stuff written just for this recording”. One of the things Luther is trying to do with the fundraiser is to involve backers in the production process. For just a $10 investment, a backer would get voting rights on both the album art and the title, in addition to a hardcopy of the recording. Higher levels of backing will yield access to Luther’s recorded sketchbook, and the top tier features an opportunity to spark the creation of a brand new work, which will be dedicated to the backer.
